AUS recap: Dal, UNB victorious

Dalhousie (12-4, 6-3) 82, St. FX (4-12, 1-6) 67  Tigers shook off a poor performance vs. Saint Mary’s, welcoming back 6’3″ Kashrell Lawrence, who started a game-deciding 17-4 run early in the third quarter when Dalhousie pulled away from the visiting X-Men.

5’11” point guard Ritchie Kanza-Mata had 7 of his 13 points and 3 of his game-high 10 assists during the big run as all 5 Tigers starters scored in double digits led by 6’2″ Jarred Reid‘s 15 points.  Dal shot a very tidy 35-67 (52.2%) from the field including 7 for 17 from downtown.

X was led by their all-purpose big man 6’7″ Kevin Bercy with 18 points on 8-11 shooting.  The X-Men return home to Antigonish this evening to prepare for a home game tomorrow night against UNB Varsity Reds, who won in Sydney tonight.

UNB (8-10, 4-4) 84, Cape Breton (6-10, 4-5) 83  Diminutive Matt Daley continues to show he is one of the more under-rated players in the entire country, again epitomizing the scrappy V-Reds with 29 points and 7 assists including the game-winning shot with 2 seconds remaining as the Reds stayed within distance of top part of the AUS standings with a huge road win.

In a dramatic back-and-forth finish, Daley scored 6 of the final 9 points of the game for the Reds and 9 overall in the fourth quarter as the Capers overcame a late 9 point deficit to take a one point lead on a jumper by Cedric Kasango with 7 seconds remaining.

Montreal native Kenny Jean-Louis flirted with a triple-double with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists for CBU while sharpshooter Jack MacAulay added 17 on 5 3’s.  UNB’s star guard Javon Masters added 24 for the V-Reds on 8-18 shooting.

UNB travels to Antigonish to face St. FX tomorrow night.
