6’5″ sophomore Alexandre Leclerc had 14 of his game-high 27 points during a 33-8 run to start the game as Laval hammered Concordia 71-62 in Ste. Foy, sweeping the home-and-home series to move to 3-3 on the RSEQ season. The athletic wing went 5 for 13 from downtown overall as Laval created 20 Concordia turnovers – the first 10 coming in the early game-deciding run – to win comfortably. The final score was a bit misleading as Laval led 68-51 with just 3 minutes remaining.
Stingers were hurt again by a lack of perimeter shooting – Concordia shot just 4 of 25 from downtown including a combined 3 for 14 from 6’4″ Ken Beaulieu and Jean-Daniel Mathieu, inserted into the starting lineup and getting more featured time likely to help stretch defenses.
Point guard Karl Demers-Belanger was also instrumental in the early run and had his usual steady effort with 12 points and 5 assists in 37 minutes. Wing Thibaud Dezutter added 13 points on 5-9 shooting for Laval.
Rouge et Or now prepare for what could be a season-defining home-and-home set with first place McGill Redmen beginning next Thursday night in Montreal. The reeling Stingers, winners of just 1 of their last 6 games overall including 3 consecutive RSEQ losses have a home-and-home vs. red-hot UQAM.
