Coming off a home loss on Friday night that buried the Gaiters further in last place in the standings and facing a double-digit fourth quarter deficit against a Laval team that was on a roll looking to sweep, Bishop’s turned things around with a 12-0 run and a perfect 12 for 12 effort from the free throw line late in an improbable, dramatic, potentially season-saving 77-73 win in Ste. Foy that keeps Rod Gilpin‘s group within striking distance of the post-season. Gaiters are now 2-6 with a pair of games against slumping McGill on tap for this coming weekend.
Laval appeared to have the game well in hand behind another wonderful effort from 6’5″ Alexandre Leclerc (19 points, 5 assists) but the Gaiters clamped down, holding Rouge et Or to just 4 points in a 7 minute stretch of the fourth quarter as 6’0″ Jonathan Bermillo had 10 of his team-high 19 in the fourth quarter including 7 in the final 2 minutes – a dagger 3 that gave Bishop’s a 6 point cushion that was the most important.
Clearly the return of 6’5″ David Belanger to the Bishop’s lineup has been key as the sophomore was again perfect from the floor going 6 for 6 for 18 points – Belanger shot an incredible 15 for 15 from the field (100%) on the weekend, showing no ill effects from a recent hand injury.
Bishop’s was again without 6’3″ shooting guard Peter Weston and won despite giving up 15 offensive rebounds and committing 23 turnovers.
