AUS: Huskies draw closer to playoffs

Saint Mary’s 77, Cape Breton 58   6’0″ Marquis Clayton led a game-deciding 19-2 fourth-quarter run as the Huskies leaped over CBU into 5th spot in the AUS standings with a 4-point game win at home.  Clayton, back from an injury that sidelined him for 3 weeks, had 7 of his 10 points in the run as the Huskies made a season-high 10 3’s, going 42% from downtown.  Capers suddenly find themselves in the sixth and final playoff spot in the AUS standings, only 4 points ahead of Memorial.

UPEI 97, Memorial 87  The Panthers jumped out to an early 20 point lead, keeping the Seahawks off balance with a 1-3-1 zone and got a strong performance from AUS POY candidate Tyler Scott who had 27 points, 14 rebounds and 8 assists as UPEI kept pace with Dalhousie for first place in the conference, just 4 points behind the leading Tigers.  In what is becoming an almost anti-climatic fact, UPEI was whistled for only 2 fouls in the entire first half with the final 10 coming when the game was well decided.

UNB 96, St. FX 70  Varsity Reds officially clinched a playoff spot as 5’9″ pg Matt Daley had 27 points, 7 rebounds and 10 assists as UNB pulled away in the second quarter for an easy win at home against last-place St. FX which went 0 for 14 from downtown for the game.  The loss combined with a pair of wins by Saint Mary’s this weekend virtually eliminates the X-Men from the AUS tournament for the second consecutive season.  X (3-13, 6 pts) has a maximum 14 points remaining to gain in their final four games and are chasing sixth place Cape Breton (7-10, 18 pts. with 12 points remaining).  The teams meet next Saturday in Antigonish.
