We are less than 48 hours away from the start of Canada’s U-17 campaign at the FIBA World Championships in Spain and the Canadians continue to prepare, welcoming 6’8″ Simi Shittu back after his stint in the Senior team camp. Shittu saw his first action last night as Canada defeated Lithuania 90-74 in a pre-tournament scrimmage. Shittu brings size and athleticism on the glass for the Canadian team, an area that was challenged both last summer in the FIBA Americas gold medal game against the U.S.A. and in Canada’s only loss thus far this summer, in overtime in France against the French, a game played without both Shittu and star 6’5″ lefty wing R.J. Barrett. Barrett saw about 8 minutes of time yesterday in Croatia as the Senior men’s team defeated their hosts and word is that Barrett is now making his way to Spain to join his U-17 teammates in time for Thursday, when Canada kicks off the tournament against Australia, a team they comfortably defeated in France but a team that led the French team by double digits in the second half before bowing late to the home side. Canada will also face China and Finland in their Group C action on Saturday and Sunday. It now appears that all games will be shown on the Internet: follow this link to video of all games.
