Facing 40 minutes of a zone that observers compared to the athletic Syracuse 2-3, the host Rouge et Or held leads as large as 6 midway through the third quarter but in the end succumbed to a series of turnovers in a 64-62 loss to Arkansas Pine-Bluff. Laval shot just 7 for 28 from downtown despite getting a solid 4-7 effort from beyond the stripe from veteran guard Karl Demers-Belanger, who led Laval with 14 points. 6’5″ Alexandre Leclerc struggled from beyond the arc going just 2 for 9 and also had 14 for Rouge et Or. Tonight saw the debut of 6’9″ Sam Houston State transfer Marc-Andre Fortin, who picked up 2 first-half fouls but came alive in the second half, finishing with 8 points on a perfect 4 of 4 shooting which included a pair of tip-ins on the offensive glass plus 7 rebounds. Fortin is a very active and athletic big man who showed able passing ability from the high post vs. the zone and should be one of the top newcomers in the rapidly-improving RSEQ. Arkansas Pine-Bluff next travels to our Nation’s capital to meet Carleton Ravens on Friday night while Laval prepares to meet Florida A&M this coming Sunday.
