Guelph (1-0) 90, Memorial (0-2) 65… Holding the Seahawks to just 25 second-half points, the Gryphs kicked off their CIS pre-season with a resounding home win, going 7 for 14 from 3 point land after halftime to defeat visiting Memorial. MUN had taken a halftime lead, primarily on the heroics of 6’9″ Vasilije Curcic, who finished with 23 points and 7 rebounds but Gryphs Head Coach Chris O’Rourke assigned 6’5″ Kingsley D’Silva to guard the outstanding MUN center to great success, holding him down in the second half. Guelph outscored MUN 52-25 after halftime and held the Seahawks to just 9 of 30 overall from the floor in the final two quarters. Guelph had 5 players in double figures, led by 6’3″ fourth-year wing Drew Walford with 21 points and 5 steals and who O’Rourke praised as a “catalyst at both ends”. 6’3″ local Guelph product Tommy Yanchus added 14 points on 4-5 3’s as the Gryphs made 11 of 25 from beyond the arc for the game. 6’0″ Jonathan Wallace added 13 while D’Silva had arguably his most productive game as Gryph, adding 12 points and 5 boards to his strong defensive day. The Gryphs host Jim Flack‘s Sheridan Bruins tomorrow afternoon while Memorial completes their tour of Southern Ontario with an afternoon affair at York who is currently in action at home against Seneca… Guelph gym update: after originally planning to move into their brand-new athletic complex/basketball facility in October, plans now are for the new facility to be available likely by January.
