Shaver paying early dividends for Nipissing


Nipissing (1-1) 68, Algoma (0-2) 64… 6’8″ Justin Shaver had 19 points and 14 rebounds as the Lakers came from behind to defeat the Thunderbirds in North Bay.  Shaver, a transfer from Carleton who has sat out the past 2 seasons, went 9 for 12 off the bench in just 24 minutes, helping to rally the home side.  6’7″ Kalil Langston added 19 points and 10 rebounds for Nipissing which also dominated the glass 41-25 as their size and strength was a factor.  Lakers hurt themselves with 22 turnovers and by shooting just 1 for 9 from the three point land after halftime however Langston and Shaver had no matches inside.  6’3″ B.C. native Cailum White had 12 to lead Algoma while 5’10” Jake Clendinning and 6’3″ freshman Nathan Riley (Kitchener St. Mary’s) each added 10 for the Thunderbirds who made just 7 of 26 3’s and shot just 34% for the game but stayed in it with only 11 turnovers.  The Lakers now travel to Montreal for next weekend’s Concordia Classic where they will meet the host Stingers, Brock and Cape Breton.
