Marauders pull away late in 3rd to defeat X

McMaster (4-0) 80, St. FX (2-4) 63…  6’7″ Connor Gilmore hit his only 2 threes of the game on back-to-back possessions at a key interval late in the third quarter, breaking open what was a 3 point game as the Marauders remained undefeated, handing X-Men their fourth consecutive loss.  Gilmore, a third-year stretch 4, went only 2 for 11 from downtown for the game but made his only 2 makes count in stretching Mac’s three point lead, which had been as many as 15 in the second quarter, back to double digits against a resilient X group playing their third road game in 48 hours.  Gilmore finished with an 11-point, 10-rebound double double.  Mac also got a solid performance from their active fifth-year forward 6’4″ Rohan Boney, who went a tidy 7-12 from the floor en route to a game-high 20 points and 7 assists.  Mac, which had shot a blistering 37 for 73 (>50%) from the floor in their first 3 games of the pre-season – all victories – relied more on Boney’s play inside as Mac shot just 6 for 30 from 3 on the afternoon.  But Mac ruled the glass (41-31) and saw X go just 53% from the line and turn the ball over 21 times, usually receipes for disaster on the road where making free throws and taking care of the ball are key.  6’2″ guard David McCulloch had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in another tidy effort for Mac.  6’7″ forward Kevin Bercy led X with 11 points and 12 rebounds while lefty guard Davonte Provo made 3 of his 4 three-point goals and also finished with 11 for X, which goes home 0-3 on their challenging tour of Southern Ontario.  Mac hosts Dalhousie tomorrow afternoon, also at 5 PM ET while X gets set to host their annual X-Men Invitational in Antigonish next weekend.
