Saturday’s CIS Action across the country

Quick look at today’s action in the CIS.  We plan to travel to Kingston for the Tindall tournament and a round table featuring a mentor/consultant of some note.

2 PM ET Carrol University (NCAA DIII) at York… Pioneers, from Waukesha, Wisconsin are an NCAA D3 team in the tough CCIW (College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) who begin their four games in four days tour of Ontario against the Lions – they will also play U of T Varsity Blues, Humber Hawks and Windsor Lancers.  Pioneers are not to be confused with Carroll College Saints, an NAIA team from Helena, MT that will play both Alberta and Lethbridge later this month.

3 PM ET Maine Fort-Kent vs. Dalhousie (at Mickey Place UPEI tournament)… Tigers got 31 points from 6’6″ Sven Stammberger last night while Maine Fort-Kent almost came back but were defeated by Concordia yesterday.  Stats from this tournament have been challenging.

4 PM ET  Ottawa (1-1) vs. Memorial (1-3)… Second day at the Tindall begins with the Gee-Gees strong front line that includes 6’9″ Jean Pierre-Charles and 6’6″ Brody Maracle – both Carleton transfers – up against 6’9″ Vasilije Curcic, one of the better offensive big men in the country.  Ottawa defeated Alberta last night while MUN watched Queen’s make 17 of 29 3’s in their loss to the Gaels.

4 PM ET  Humber vs. UQAM at Naismith tournament in Waterloo… Hawks go for the tournament championship against UQAM, coming off their first loss to a CIS team this season.  Expect a transition-filled game with 6’11” Yassin Debache potentially being a difference maker.

5 PM ET Holland College vs. Cape Breton at St. FX Invitational – consolation championship… Capers had a much better effort defensively by all accounts against an explosive Saint Mary’s group before succumbing by 10 while playing without starters 6’2″ Seth Amoah (illness) and 6’2″ Nico Brauner, their German import point guard who remains sidelined with a foot injury.  Hurricanes shot just 4 for 28 from 3 and lost the game in the final 3 minutes last night against X.

6 PM ET Manitoba (2-1) at Waterloo (0-1)… final game of Naismith tournament… Bisons rebounded after two consecutive losses to defeat UQAM and are starting to show their depth with 6’7″ Joey Nitychoruk coming off the bench last night for 18 points and 7 rebounds.  Warriors had an encouraging effort against a talented, athletic Humber Hawks side, bouncing back after a difficult first day with a starting lineup that features 3 freshman straight out of high school.

6 PM ET Western (1-0) vs. UVic (1-3) at House-Laughton tournament… Mustangs had a gutsy, come-from-behind win over Laval last night, featuring their pair of newcomer guards in 6’1″ Omar Shiddo and 6’0″ Eriq Jenkins.  Vikes stayed with Carleton for about 15 minutes basically on the heroics of 6’7″ Grant Sitton.  The way both teams defend this could be a game in the 60’s.

7 PM ET  Saint Mary’s (4-0) at St. FX (2-4) in St. FX Invitational championship game… Huskies and X-Men renew their long and storied rivalry in Antigonish.  SMU remains undefeated and is basically running a 7 man rotation currently without 6’8″ Osman Barrie (injured).  X showed their resilience and experience last night, finishing their game on a 9-2 run to defeat a tough Holland College team.  Both teams love to get up and down the floor so one would expect a game in the 80’s or 90’s.

7 PM ET Concordia (4-1) at UPEI (0-1) at Mickey Place tournament… Stingers outlasted Maine Fort-Kent last night while Panthers stayed with touted Dal for much of the night but could not keep a lid defensively, giving up over 90 points.

7 PM ET Thompson Rivers (0-1) vs. Saskatchewan (1-0) at Heat Classic in Kelowna… Both teams kicked off their season’s last night at UBC-O.

8 PM ET Alberta (0-1) at Queen’s (1-2)… Golden Bears and “Golden” Gaels in what some are calling the Goldfinger Bowl (I know…weak).  Queen’s blistered it from 3 last night while Bears got off to a slow start vs. Gee-Gees before making it a game late.  Sometimes teams that travel are better on the second day.  Bears got a nice effort off the bench from prized 6’2″ freshman Andre Kelly, son of Brandon Bobcat great and Hamilton, ON native Jude Kelly.

8 PM ET Laval (1-3) at Carleton (4-0)… These teams have already met once – two weeks ago at the Stu Aberdeen Classic on the opening night and Rouge et Or have given Ravens the most interesting game thus far, staying within striking distance for much of time that afternoon.  6’9″ Eddie Ekiyor , Ravens touted newcomer, competing against 6’9″ Marc-Andre Fortin, Laval’s NCAA D1 transfer features a pair of rim protectors and aggressive finishers, has the makings of a nice duel.  Rouge et Or are without 6’2″ Vladimir Thomas, arguably their best and most explosive shooter/scorer.

8 PM ET  Valley City State at Brandon… The Vikings from Valley City, North Dakota, an NAIA school, play the first of two this weekend in the Wheat City against the Bobcats.

9 PM ET MacEwan (2-0) at UBC-O (0-1)… Second night of the Heat Classic

10 PM ET  Lethbridge (0-1) at Fraser Valley (0-0)… Second night of a three-game-in-two and half days tour of B.C. by the Pronghorns.
