Although his team will be clearly undermanned this weekend when McGill host their annual Redbird Classic in Montreal, Redmen Head Coach Dave DeAveiro didn’t hesitate when asked if he could send a team of four to China to represent Canada in a FISU 3 on 3 World championship event: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for these young athletes who have been loyal to our program. We are grateful that UQAM approached us and happy to send our group”, referring to the 4 player side that will represent Canada in 6’7″ Francois Bourque, 6’5″ Michael Peterkin, 6’9″ Sebastien Beckett and 6’2″ Dele Ogundokun. Canada originally won last year’s title represented by UQAM Citadins however Coach Nate Philippe had already committed to Brock’s RBC Classic this weekend and fought for another Canadian team to replace them which turned out to be McGill. As Philippe noted: “We are very happy that CIS (now U-Sport) and Canada Basketball will still be represented at the tournament and will be rooting for McGill to bring home another Gold”.
