Acadia (1-3) 90, Saint Mary’s (5-1) 88… 6’9″ left Erik Nissen had his way inside with 27 points and 17 rebounds including the game-winning free throws with just 6 seconds remaining as the Axemen dropped Huskies from the ranks of the undefeated with a semi-final win at the Capers Fall Classic in Sydney. Nissen had 11 points in the decisive fourth quarter including a pair of “and 1’s” and after a three by 6’5″ Kyle Arsenault gave Acadia a six-point lead with 2 1/2 minutes remaining, it appear Axemen were on their way. But SMU scored six in a row including a pair of clutch free throws by 6’5″ Theon Reefer. Nissen followed with a pair as did Reefer, setting up the final Acadia possession that resulted in Nissen’s final 2 free throws. Saint Mary’s had one final opportunity to tie or win but a baseline drive that resulted in a difficult, wrap-around pass to 6’4″ Brian Rouse directly in front of the rim was fumbled as the horn sounded as Acadia survived. Reefer and 6’3″ Kemar Alleyne both had 19 for Saint Mary’s with Alleyne shooting 9 for 11 from the floor. 5’10” Marquis Clayton had 9 of his 14 in the final frame while Arsenault added 16 on 4-8 3’s for Acadia, who will face the winner of St. FX vs. Cape Breton in the second semi-final. Saint Mary’s played without 6’8″ Osman Barrie who remains injured.
