Friday’s CIS men’s schedule

Plenty of action again today in the CIS/U-Sport as the Brock RBC Classic kicks off in St. Catharines with 4 games as well as the Lea Marc Printing tournament at the Duckworth Center on the campus of U. of Winnipeg.  Later tonight in Edmonton, two of the top teams in Canada West participate in the annual Golden Bear Classic as Alberta and UBC kick it off against two OUA side Nipissing (which defeated MacEwan last night in Edmonton) and Western Mustangs.  The Redbird Classic also begins at McGill in Montreal.

Probably the best game of the night is in St. Catharines where two likely Top 10 teams will meet as Ryerson visits Brock.

Friday’s Games – all Eastern time unless otherwise noted:

2 PM  Regina (1-6)  vs. Guelph (2-0) (RBC Brock Classic)… Gryphs are much deeper and experienced this season.  Cougars recently welcomed back prized 6’1″ freshman Johneil Johnson from Nova Scotia.

4 PM  UQAM (4-1) vs. Windsor (2-1)  (RBC Brock Classic)… Lancers are in a semi-rebuilding mode at least until 6’7″ Luke Allin and 6’5″ Mitch Farrell return later this season while Citadins have been the most pleasant surprise arguably in the CIS/U-Sport, playing well after the sudden departure of All-Canadian Kewyn Blain.

4 PM  McMaster (6-0) vs. Laurentian (0-0) (Redbird Classic at McGill in Montreal)… Voyageurs kick off their pre-season while Marauders are flying with another quality win last night at Concordia.

5 PM ET  Acadia (0-3) vs. SMU (5-0) (Championship semi-final Capers Fall Classic)… Axemen found the range from 3 point land last night and Huskies remained undefeated while having 6’8″ Osman Barrie back in the lineup.

5 PM  Queen’s (1-4) vs. UNB (1-2) (non-conference exhibition at Laval)… Both teams are off to tough starts with injuries not helping.  Reds got star guard Javon Masters back for last night’s tight win over host Laval.  This lines up as a very interesting match between teams that both want to play fast but must rebound well to do so.

6 PM  Dalhousie (4-1) vs. York (0-2) (RBC Brock Classic)… These teams met two weeks ago in North York with Tigers rallying in the second half for a 20+ point win as 6’6″ Alex Carson came alive from the perimeter.  York’s length and athleticism gave Tigers some issues defensively but Dal was able to turn the game around at their defensive end.

6 PM ET/5 PM local  Brandon (0-3) vs. Manitoba  (2-2) (Lea Marc Printing tournament at Winnipeg/Duckworth Center)… Bisons are off to a disappointing start and no word on whether or not 6’4″ Keith Omoerah will be available tonight.  Bobcats are working in several new faces into their lineup.

7 PM ET/8 PM local  Cape Breton (0-4) vs. St. FX (2-5) (Championship semi-final Capers Fall Classic)… Traditional rivals meet in Center 2000 with Capers coming off their best overall game of the season yesterday against Maine Fort-Kent while St. FX continues to try to find which of their bench players will step up after getting a big shooting game from 6’1″ freshman Justin Andrew yesterday.

7 PM ET/5 PM local  Red Deer vs Calgary (4-0) (Graham Shootout at Saskatchewan – Day Two)… The defending Canada West champions and this season’s favorites, who defeated Algoma last night, meet ACAC traditional power Red Deer, who lost by 19 to Saskatchewan last night.

8 PM ET  Ryerson (1-1) at Brock (4-0) (RBC Brock Classic)… Arguably the feature match of the evening between two likely Top 10 teams

8 PM ET/6 PM local  Western (1-2) vs. UBC (2-0) (Golden Bear Invitational at Edmonton, Alberta/6 PM local)… T-Birds are likely to hammer the ball inside to All-Canadian candidate 6’9″ Connor Morgan and 6’7″ Luka Zaharijevic while Mustangs should rely on their pair of new athletic guards in 6’0″ Eriq Jenkins and 6’2″ Omar Shitto.  Mustangs veteran sharpshooter Alex Coote is a native of Vancouver.

8 PM ET   UBC-O (0-2) at McGill (1-2) (Redbird Classic in Montreal)… Heat get the Redmen, normally in the Top 10 discussion, on a weekend where 4 regulars are in China.

8 PM ET/7 PM local  Dakota College at Bottineau (NJCAA) at Winnipeg… Wesmen are undefeated thus far and host the Junior College team from North Dakota on the first nigth of their tournament.

9 PM ET/7 PM local  Algoma (0-3) at Saskatchewan (3-0) (Graham Shootout – Day Two)… Huskies continue to shoot the 3 ball aggressively, going 11 for 30 last night and getting back their experienced 5’11” guard Alex Unruh who missed all of last weekend’s action at the Heat Classic due to food poisoning.

9 PM ET/7 PM local  Bishop’s (2-1) at Lethbridge (1-2) (non-conference exhibition)… Another intriguing inter-conference match-up as the young Gaiters appear to be maturing rapidly and have meaningful quality depth from which to choose.  Pronghorns are working in new “go-to” guys and come off a 1-2 record in Vancouver last weekend.

10 PM ET/8 PM local  Nipissing (2-2) at Alberta (3-1) (Golden Bear Invitational at Edmonton, Alberta/6 PM local)… An interesting match-up could ensue between Bears emerging 6’6″ post Brody Clarke and Lakers burly 6’6″ forward Justin Shaver who creates physical match-up issues for most paint-area players.
