Gaiters dominate in impressive road win at Mount Royal

Bishop’s (2-1) 89, Mount Royal (1-3) 69… Gaiters jumped to a 12 point halftime lead and then broke open the game in the second half, leading by as many as 30 with about 4 minutes remaining in an impressive road win in Calgary against the Cougars.  6’0″ Jona Bermillo (16 points, 6 assists) and 6’5″ Nick Harvey (15 points/12 rebounds) both broke out of what had been slow starts and Coach Rod Gilpin was able to play the majority of his bench despite injuries to 6’11” Jonah Fogg, 6’8″ Yassin Naji and 6’2″ U.S. import point guard Kevin Davis (Baltimore, MD).  Cougars 6’4″ forward Josh Ross, last season’s CCAA Player-of-the-Year at Vancouver Island University and a native of Iowa, led all scorers with 23 points while Canada West all-star 6’8″ Brett Layton although effective in spurts, appeared sluggish physically.  Gaiters now move south for a pair of games against Lethbridge Pronghorns tonight and tomorrow night.  Cougars now get ready for a pair of non-conference games next weekend at UVic.
