Late CIS/U-Sport Action from out west last night

Lethbridge 71, Bishop’s 69… 6’0″ Josh Sparks hit a fade-away jumper from the top of the bowl as the game ended to lift the Pronghorns to a dramatic win over visiting Gaiters.  Video evidence available on Pronghorns twitter site.  Earlier 6’7″ Owen Martell had tied the game for the Gaiters with a clutch 3; he finished with 12 points as Bishop’s came all the way back from a late 6 point deficit to tie it in the final minute setting up Sparks’ heroics.  6’5″ David Belanger had 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead Bishop’s while 6’6″ U.K. import Elliot Sentence led all scorers with 23 points to lead the Horns.  Box Score  At the Alberta Golden Bear Invitational in Edmonton…  The host Bears pulled away late in the second quarter to defeat Nipissing 84-67 behind 19 points and 11 rebounds from 6’7″ Mamadou Gueye who added 4 dunks in the game including back-to-back slams late that extended the lead to as many as 20.  New 6’2″ point guard Austin Waddoups continues to bring consistency and steady play to the all-important point guard spot for the Bears, knocking down a pair of 3’s during a 21-7 run that provided a 15 point lead early in the third quarter – the fundamentally sound Waddoups finished with 14 points and 8 assists.  6’7″ Brody Clarke was in foul trouble for much of the contest, picking up his 3rd and 4th fouls early in the third quarter but still finished with 14 points but Coach Barnaby Craddock has a growing presence off the bench in 7’1″ 5th year center Brett Roughead, who turned out to be a very good match-up for Lakers burly 6’7″ center/forward Justin Shaver.  Roughead played 20 minutes finishing with 10 points on 5-6 shooting, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks and his length and size present a formidable rim protecting element with the right checks.  Lakers had one more run that got the game back to five late in the third led by heroics of 6’4″ sophomore Marcus Lewis (Brampton, ON) who had 10 consecutive points including a dunk – Lewis finished with 16 points and 9 boards – 5 on the offensive glass.  But then Gueye took over with another slam and Roughead had a block and dunk to provide the final gap.  6’2″ fourth-year guard Jordon Campbell had 15 for the Lakers while 6’3″ Ottawa native Ismael Kaba (Ottawa Sir Robert Borden) knocked down 4 3’s and had 14 in the loss.  Nipissing faces UBC today at 3 PM local/5 PM MT while Alberta gets Western Mustangs… UBC 94, Western 70… The T-Birds built a 16 point lead early in the second quarter and maintained a double digit lead for the entire game in a comfortable win.  At the Graham Shootout, the championship game is set this afternoon between Calgary Dinos and host Saskatchewan Huskies (3 PM local/5 PM ET) after Dinos hammered Red Deer College and Huskies pulled away in the second half to comfortably defeat Algoma Thunderbirds… At the Lea Marc Printing tournament at the University of Winnipeg, Brandon Bobcats upset Manitoba Bisons 76-63 breaking the game open in the fourth quarter as the Bisons shot just 2 for 20 from three-point land and turned it over 21 times.  6’5″ Earl Thompson Jr. (Henderson, NV) finished with 26 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the way from Brandon, who meets host Winnipeg Wesmen, 91-77 winners over Dakota College of Bottineau, an NJCAA program from North Dakota.
