McGill (4-1) 74, Laurentian (0-2) 62… Getting a solid effort from freshman point guard Kendrick Jolin and several other role players, the hometown Redmen pulled away late for a victory over the Voyageurs. Both teams were without several regulars. McGill won despite an awful 1-15 effort from the field by 6’1″ Jenning Leung but the veteran did make 8 of 9 free throws as the Redmen went a tidy 20-25 from the stripe to help earn the victory. Redmen also got a nice lift off the bench from 6’4″ Avery Cadogan who had 12 points and 14 rebounds including 6 big offensive boards. 6’2″ guard Isaiah Cummins added 10 off the bench and 6’1″ freshman Greg Trahan had a big 3 that quelled a Laurentian run that got the game back to 3 in the second half. The exciting, athletic Voyageurs were led by 6’2″ combo guard Kadre Gray (Eastern Commerce/Oakwood) who broke people down for a game-high 24 points including 3-5 3’s and 9-17 overall. 6’4″ Othel Watson added 10 while returning forward Nelson Yengue added 11 boards but shot just 2-12 from the floor. McGill maintained leads of 4-6 and as many as 8 or 9 before pulling away late for the double digit win. Laurentian meets UBC-O tomorrow afternoon in the only Sunday game at the Redbird Classic.
