St. FX (4-5) 73, Acadia (1-4) 66… 6’0″ lefty Akil Charles broke a 61-all tie with a clutch three pointer with just two minutes remaining and the X-Men stiffened defensively down the stretch to claim the championship at the Capers Fall Classic in Sydney. 6’7″ Kevin Bercy was a bear all weekend, finishing with 20 points and 19 rebounds, shooting 9 for 15 and helped hold Axemen star 6’9″ center Eric Nissen to just 12 points and 11 rebounds, well below his tournament averages.
X also got a superlative effort from 6’2″ sophomore guard Tristan Ross, who had 10 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter including a big 3 that gave X a three point lead late and then helped seal the deal with 3 consecutive free throws after being fouled. Acadia led by 5 early until X authored a 13-0 second quarter run to lead by as many as 9 and then 7 at the half. But Trevon Grant got going (13 points, 12 rebounds) and X got their transition game going, knocking down 3 threes in the fourth including Charles clutch shot to gain the confidence-building win. Acadia made just 5 of 22 3’s and turned it over 20 times.
Both teams now prepare for AUS regular season play which begins in two weeks with X travelling to UPEI for a pair of games against the Panthers in Charlottetown while Acadia preps for a home-and-home series against Saint Mary’s Huskies.
