Gueye, Bears leave no doubt in easy win


Alberta (5-1) 103, Western (1-4) 73… 6’7″ Mamadou Gueye dominated from the opening tip, scoring 23 of his game-high 25 points in the first half when Golden Bears raced to an early 18 point lead, eventually building margins as high as 33 in an easy win over visiting Western Mustangs as the Golden Bear Invitational concluded on Saturday night in Edmonton.  Alberta made their first four 3’s of the game, racing out to an early double digit lead as Gueye shot 9 for 10 and made both his 3’s in the first half.  Bears shot 63% and dominated the glass at 22-8 in the decisive opening 20 minutes.

6’7″ Brody Clarke added 20 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists as Alberta dominated inside and once again got a very steady performance at the point from 6’2″ Austin Waddoups who finished with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in just 21 minutes with just 1 turnover.  6’2″ freshman Andre Kelly added 15 points and 6 rebounds for Alberta, which shot 12 for 25 from 3 for the game.

Mustangs 6’3″ third-year reserve wing Jedson Tavernier went a perfect 4 for 4 from 3 and led Western with 14 points with three of his bombs coming in the second half.  The Mustangs were originally scheduled to play at MacEwan this afternoon however this game does not appear as of this morning.  Western meets Laurentian next Saturday at home in their final pre-season exhibition.  Alberta travels next week to Lethbridge for a pair of pre-season games against Regina Cougars and Carroll College (NAIA) in a homecoming for Bears Head Coach Barnaby Craddock who starred as a Pronghorn All-Canadian.

In the other game of the tournament, UBC Thunderbirds hammered Nipissing 83-59.  Once again, 6’9″ Conor Morgan led the way for UBC with 14 points and 11 rebounds in just 14 minutes of play, while T-Birds guard Phil Jalalpoor led all players in the game with 15 points.  6’7″ big man Luka Zaharijevic added 14 points and 8 boards while All-Canadian Jordan Jensen-Whyte had 13.  UBC hosts Laurier and Lakehead at home in Vancouver in their final two pre-season tests next weekend.
