Gryphs claim comfortable win over Laurentian

Guelph (3-2) 79, Laurentian (1-3) 75… The Gryphs jumped out to lead as large as 16 early in the fourth quarter and Voyageurs got no closer than 7 until the final possession as Guelph completed their pre-season with a home win, offsetting another prolific effort from Vees 6’2″ freshman guard Kadre Grey who finished with a game-high 31 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists .  Fifteen different Gryphs saw time including twelve who played at least 10 minutes as Coach Chris O’Rourke spread minutes around to his entire bench, especially after grabbing a 22-9 lead in the first quarter and finishing the first half on an 11-2 run to lead by 12 at the break.  5’10” Taylor Boers had 11 of his team-high 16 points in the second half including 6 consecutive to give Guelph a 66-50 late in the third.  Guelph has welcomed back prized 6’5″ recruit Aaron Nugent, who is recovering from a torn labrum – he added 10 points tonight.  6’5″ Nelson Yengue added 16 points – all in the second half – and 6 rebounds for Laurentian, which takes on Western tomorrow night at Alumni Hall in London in the final tune-up for both teams before the start of the OUA regular season.
