Freshman Lewis impresses again as Lakers defeat Rouge et Or

Nipissing (4-5) 83, Laval (2-7) 67…  6’3″ freshman Jaaden Lewis continued his impressive early-season form, knocking down 6-8 3’s and finishing with 22 points as the Lakers jumped out to leads as large as 28 in defeating Rouge et Or in a non-conference game in North Bay on Friday night.  Lakers took advantage of poor perimeter shooting by Laval:  star veterans 5’11” Karl Demers-Belanger and 6’6″ Alexandre Leclerc combined to shoot just 6 for 23 from downtown, part of a 9-35 (25%) effort by Rouge et Or combined, with many of the shots “wide open” by eyewitness accounts.  Nipissing continues to impress with 6’6″ Justin Shaver authoring a 12 point, 12 rebound double double in just 20 minutes.  6’4″ Marcus Lewis had 18 for the Lakers who shot 14 for 32 from downtown and turned it over just 8 times in the win.  Both teams were missing regular rotation players including Lakers star 6’7″ forward Kalil Langston while Laval was without 6’1″ Vladimir Thomas and 6’5″ Daniel Mutanda.  Rouge et Or also hurt themselves going just 10 for 21 from the free throw line including 6’6″ Charles Andre-Horth who had 14 points but was just 2-7 from the line.  Laval now gets ready to start their RSEQ season on Thursday against defending conference champions McGill.  Lakers prepare to host Windsor Lancers and Western Mustangs next Friday and Saturday as Nipissing opens their OUA regular season.
