RSEQ: Citadins outlast Bishop’s with late tear-drop

UQAM (1-0) 76, Bishop’s (0-2) 72… 6’6″ Christopher Doumpa dropped in a game-deciding put-back with just 10 seconds remaining, breaking a tie, as Citadins came up with a huge opening night road win in Lennoxville.  Doumpa, who finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds in 26 minutes, grabbed a three-point miss by 6’2″ Greishe Clerjuste in the paint, turned and swished a tear-drop from about 8 feet to save UQAM.  Earlier, Clerjuste who had 23 points in the game on 8-19 shooting, knocked down a clutch 3 from the left wing with about 2 1/2 minutes, allowing Citadins to re-take what had been a 14 point UQAM lead after Bishop’s rallied behind 6’1″ freshman Joany Castor-Thadal (12 points) and 6’0″ veteran Jona Bermillo (14 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists).  6’0″ Charles Miller was money from the perimeter all evening for UQAM finishing 23 points and Clerjuste, while shooting just 2- 7 from the floor after halftime, made both finishes count down the stretch.  UQAM used a late second quarter 16-3 run to grab a 14 point lead and later led by 12 with about 4 minutes remaining in the third before Gaiters got going as 6’6″ Duncan Lambert came off the bench to knock down 3 3’s but with Bishop’s down 2 in the final seconds, Lambert was tied up by UQAM’s “d” after taking an in-bounds pass and with possession arrow pointed to Citadins, UQAM was able close the game on the foul line.  Citadins Coach Nate Philippe was pleased with his team’s first-half offensive execution when UQAM shot 60% from the floor but felt the second half had “too many turnovers (14 in the half/23 for the game) and mental errors but we made plays down the stretch when we needed to and showed alot of toughness in gutting out a tough RSEQ road win.”  UQAM, which was picked by this site to finish 5th in RSEQ are now 6-3 vs. U-Sport teams and prepare to host McGill Redmen this Thursday night in Montreal.  Bishop’s next action is at Laval on Friday night.
