Congratulations to legendary Carleton Head Coach Dave Smart who was awarded the prestigious honor of “Order of Ottawa” at a ceremony last night in our Nation’s Capital.
In addition to his tireless work and unprecedented success with the Ravens, Coach Smart has been a major influence over the growth of amateur basketball, especially in the Capital Region since co-founding the Ottawa Guardsmen over 25 years ago.
Less publicly known and probably more noteworthy are the numerous volunteer activities he and his program are involved with that the Mayor of Ottawa clearly has also recognized in the following statement of recognition:
“Since taking over as head coach of the Carleton University Ravens men’s basketball team in 1999, Mr. Smart has turned the program into one of the most successful dynasties in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) with a record 12 CIS team titles. He has numerous coaching awards including six Canadian University Coach of the Year Awards and he continues to help develop outstanding young men by instilling the values of hard work, team first, respectfulness, modesty and community spirit.”
Once again, congratulations for this outstanding award that has provided not only him and his family, but the Carleton program and U-Sport in general with wonderful prestige.
