Waddoups, Pippus lead Bears three-point barrage in easy win over MacEwan


#8 Alberta (12-2, 9-0) 90, MacEwan (4-10, 2-7) 68… 6’4″ Geoff Pippus had 17 of his game-high 20 points in the first half – going a perfect 5-5 from deep in that span – while 6’1″ Austin Waddoups had three 3’s in a mid third-quarter 14-2 run that decided the game as the Golden Bears remained undefeated in Canada West play.  Bears made 11 of their first 15 threes in the game and finished 15-22 overall from deep in a dominant effort.  Waddoups finished with 17 points on 6-8 shooting including 4-6 from 3 and added 5 assists as Alberta shot 53% as a team from the floor.  6’8″ Brody Clarke authored a 13 point/10 rebound double/double in only 20 minutes while 6’7″ Mamadou Gueye had 18 for Alberta.  These teams meet again Saturday at MacEwan, finishing off their home-and-home set with a 2 PM MT/4 PM ET affair.

#4 Calgary (11-1, 6-1) 87, Mount Royal (5-8, 4-3) 83… 5’11” David Kapinga had 7 consecutive points late in the fourth quarter including the tie-breaking three with just over 2 minutes to play as the Dinos overcame a halftime deficit and 34 points from 6’4″ U.S. import/CCAA POY transfer Josh Ross in a win at Mount Royal.  One of the more underrated guards in the country, Kapinga had 9 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter including the big 3, adding 4 rebounds and 3 assists.  Ross played all 40 minutes for the Cougars, finishing 8 for 13 from downtown with 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals but Dinos held on for the late win.  6’5″ Thomas Cooper led Calgary with 27 points on 7-18 shooting with 7 points coming in the fourth quarter.  6’8″ All-Canada-West forward Brett Layton started and played only 4 1/2 minutes for Mount Royal but did not return after turning his ankle.  The teams complete their home-and-home set with a date this Saturday night at 7 PM MT/9 PM ET at Jack Simpson Gym on the campus of U of C.
