Winnipeg (12-4) 79, Algoma (2-12) 65… Wesmen used a 14-0 run early in the fourth to spring off the mat in a game Algoma dominated up until then and then pulled away for what was a much more difficult game than the final score indicated. 6’3″ Denzel Lynch-Blair had most of his in the final frame, jumping into passing lanes and following with some acrobatic transition finishes while 6’3″ Sean Tarver gave Winnipeg the lead for good with a corner 3. Wesmen outscored Algoma 34-10 in the fourth quarter and held T-Birds without a point for a 5 1/2 minute stretch during which they stormed back. Thunderbirds led by as many as 15 midway through the third and by 12 early in the fourth when Winnipeg tightened up their ball defense and finally addressed the defensive glass – Algoma had pulled away on the strength of numerous second chance opportunities and some fine three point shooting led by the Clendenning brothers. Wesmen Jamar Farlay also knocked down a pair of 3’s in the run as Winnipeg awaits the winner of Manitoba/Regina in tonight’s final game of the first day of the 50th Wesmen Classic.
