Reefer, return of Clayton push Saint Mary’s to split at Memorial

Saint Mary’s (13-6, 5-4) 88, Memorial (11-8, 7-3) 82… Energized by the return to the lineup of star 5’9″ Marquis Clayton and the steady work at both ends of 6’5″ Theon Reefer, the Huskies forced 21 Seahawk turnovers and broke away from a tie game midway through the third quarter to split their weekend, four-point games set in St. John’s.

Clayton, who sat out Saturday’s loss for the mandatory one game after being ejected from a game at St. FX before the holidays, was especially key down the stretch, scoring 12 of his 19 points in the final 15 minutes including and “and 1″ that gave Saint Mary’s a double digit lead.  Reefer finished with 28 points, 10 rebounds and 5 steals, helping SMU to a 29-15 run over a 9 minute stretch of the second half.

6’1” Daniel Gordon again was instrumental for Memorial, getting the home side off to a great start with three early 3’s and 13 of his 19 points overall before halftime but the energetic reserve turned it over 6 times and fouled out late.  6’9″ Vasilije Curcic led all scorers once again with 29 points (25 in the final 3 quarters), adding 7 rebounds and 4 assists; he had 19 in the second half alone.

6’8″ Achiul Lual was effective inside for Huskies with 14 points and 9 rebounds.  Saint Mary’s travels to Acadia for a single game in Wolfville next Friday night while Memorial has a pair of games next weekend at UNB.
