AUS: Axemen strengthen hold on tournament spot


Acadia (8-13, 6-6) 84, UPEI (6-12, 4-8) 68… Axemen jumped to an early double digit lead and then led by as many as 27 in a dominant win over the Panthers in Charlottetown, further crimping UPEI’s playoff aspirations.  Acadia now is 8 points clear of the 7th place Panthers.  6’2″ Trevon Grant led the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds as Acadia knocked down 13 of 30 threes overall.  6’2″ Tyler Scott led the Panthers with 13 points on 6-19 shooting, adding 1 rebound and 3 assists.  UPEI welcomes Saint Mary’s for another 4 point game this evening while Acadia travels to UNB.

#10 Saint Mary’s (17-7, 9-5) 93, UNB (9-8, 8-5) 80… 5’9″ Marquis Clayton had 31 points – his second 30+ game of the season – and 6’5″ Theon Reefer added 19 points and 10 boards as Huskies took the lead for good midway through the second quarter in an impact road win at UNB.  Huskies forced 19 Varsity Reds turnovers and held 6’0″ Javon Masters to just 10 points in 25 minutes to move into a three-way tie for first place in the AUS with 24 points.  Reds got as close as 6 with 3:43 remaining however Clayton and Reefer took over late to seal it.

Dalhousie (18-7, 9-4) 85, Cape Breton (0-20, 0-13) 67… 6’6″ Sven Stammberger led 4 Tigers in double figures with 20 points as Dal raced to an early double digit lead and coasted in the first of two weekend games in Sydney.
