Toronto 79, York 58… 6’5″ Devin Johnson had 15 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter when the Varsity Blues kicked off a game-deciding 23-2 run with a barrage of three-pointers, avenging an earlier loss at York with a decisive victory at home at the Goldring Center in front of an excited student-day crowd in Toronto. The game was tight through the first 20 minutes as Lions hung in on the strong work of 6’5″ Brandon Ramirez (22 points, 10 rebounds on 9/17 shooting), who continues to shine with his array of post-area moves and ability to step outside to knock 3’s down. But Johnson and 6’5″ Manny Suhota took over in the third quarter as the Blues shared the ball extremely well, making the extra pass and easily beating Lion perimeter rotations for numerous open looks. Suhota had back-to-back 3’s from the right baseline off stellar ball movement and 5’10” Christopher Barrett helped cap the run with a pair of 3’s early in the fourth that built the lead to 23. Blues also got a strong defensive effort including several rim-protecting blocks by Johnson and 6’8″ Daniel Johanssen that got the crowd into it. Toronto went through a 5 minute stretch where they collectively shot 6 for 8 from three point land. Conversely, Lions shot just 6-27 from downtown for the afternoon including Ramirez 2 for 4 and 6’4″ Julio Vasquez 3 for 6 – the rest of the shot a combined 1 for 17 from beyond the arc. Blues now host Queen’s Gaels tomorrow night while Lions, who have lost 5 in a row and 12 of their past 14, get ready to host #3 Ottawa and #1 Carleton next weekend at home.
