Konchalski misses first game of career

Somewhat lost in the wake of St. FX’s huge road win at Saint Mary’s was the fact that X-Men legendary coach Steve Konchalski was not on the bench last night for the victory over their long-time arch rivals.  Under AUS rules, Konchalski was forced to watch the game at the Homburg Center in Halifax from the stands after being whistled for two technical fouls in the final minute of X’s previous game – a loss two weeks ago in St. John’s against Memorial Seahawks.  By rule, the two T’s resulted in a one-game suspension – the first-ever in over 2,000 games for Canada’s Coach K, now in his 42nd season at the helm of X.  Assistant coaches Doc Ryan and Denton Anthony took over on the bench and watched as 6’8″ Cameron Walker knocked down a 15 foot baseline jumper on a feed from 6’0″ Davonte Provo to provide the dramatic winning basket for X.  X-Men then did a great job defending the final possession that resulted in a contested miss by 5’9″ Marquis Clayton.  Clayton, in the running for AUS MVP after a wonderful bounce-back season in this his fifth and final year, was held in check for much of the game on the fine defensive work of 6’2″ freshman Justin Andrew and 6’0″ Akil Charles.  Clayton did knock down a pair of late threes and also tied the game with a pair of clutch free throws just preceding Walker’s clutch game-winner.  St. FX has an important, four-point home game this coming Tuesday night at the Oland Center in Antigonish.  Prior to that, the Tigers play their second of two four-point games at home against Memorial this afternoon at 3 PM AT.  Saint Mary’s remains in the running for a first-round playoff bye and gets set to host Acadia next Saturday in what promises to be another wild, wacky finish and post-season in the exciting AUS.
