Playoff races and positioning will become clearer this weekend as U-Sport men’s basketball enters the most exciting period of the season culminating in this season’s Final 8 in Halifax in March. Both AUS and RSEQ conferences have no games scheduled so focus on the country will be on Ontario and Canada West, which enters the final weekend of their regular season. OUA season has about 10 days remaining and the RPI-based standings of both conferences will likely be churned this weekend.
OUA 8 PM ET
Toronto at Ryerson…Rams are firmly in third spot in the OUA RPI but likely need a win tonight at home against the improved Varsity Blues who are in control for a home playoff game at the Goldring Center as Head Coach John Campbell re-builds the Blues. 6’8″ Adam Voll‘s return should help Rams inside but still expect 6’7″ Daniel Johansson to get his touches as the Blues test Ryerson’s interior “d”. Three of the top players in the OUA will be on the floor including 6’3″ Adika Peter-McNeilly, 6’5″ Ammanuel Diressa and 6’5″ Devin Johnson while recently 6’3″ Reilly Reid has joined the conversation as one of the more explosive scorers in the conference. Depending upon how RPI standings shake out, this game could be a preview of an OUA sudden death quarter-final.
Carleton at Queen’s… Undefeated Ravens travel to Kingston to face the Gaels who should have Head Coach Steph Barrie back on the bench after he missed last weekend to be with his wife for the birth of his first child – congratulations to the Barrie family. Gaels have lost 9 in a row but remain in a playoff spot.
Ottawa at York… Gee-Gees retain #2 seed in the RPI while Lions are presently out of the playoff race.
Algoma at Brock… Badgers have won 7 in a row as 6’7″ Dani Elgadi has stepped up among others. Thunderbirds are out of the playoff race and will meet McMaster in Hamilton tomorrow night.
Lakehead at Guelph… In the first of two games in Guelph, Gryphs and T-Wolves meet with playoff implications on the line.
Laurentian at Nipissing… Senior’s night in North Bay and both teams are comfortably in playoff spots however Voyageurs especially have much to gain with a road win that could solidify a first-round playoff home game.
Canada West … For all CW previews, visit Wayne Thomas’s Canada West Hoops site which highlights two important weekend series with playoff implications beginning tonight as Thompson Rivers visits Regina and Winnipeg is at UVic.
Lethbridge travels to Edmonton to face Alberta with the Golden Bears trying to clinch #1 seed in RPI – games are Saturday afternoon and Sunday night.
