UNB 91, St. FX 82… Varsity Reds nearly gave up a 23 point lead but held off every tough X-Men run to sweep the weekend series at home in Fredericton and maintain a solid hold on second place in the AUS. UNB came out smoking from the perimeter and dominated X’s guards on the defensive end, racing to 32-9 lead with 5 minutes remaining in the second quarter. However, X woke up with much more purposeful defense, extending to full court. Offensively, 6’3″ Julius Antoine and 6’7″ Kevin Bercy had “and 1’s” and 6’0″ Akil Charles (22 points, 4-7 threes) got more involved. X-Men peeled off a 23-2 run in just 6 minutes to get it down to 2 early in the third, but could never take the lead as a balanced V-Reds offense (10 different players hit the score sheet), allowing UNB to maintain their hold on a first round bye in the AUS tournament. 6’0″ Javon Masters was effective although not dominant with 13 points (just 2-7 from the floor with some late free throws added), 6 rebounds and 8 assists. 6’5″ Donnavan Hastings led the way for the Reds with 16 while 6’0″ Hess Meyele showed off his multi-facted game with 14 points off the bench. Bercy finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds but X was outrebounded 38-27 and turned it over 22 times in what became a bit of a sloppy affair (Reds added 24 turnovers of their own). St. FX (8-9) and losers of three in a row sits in fifth place and the teams will meet again one more time in Antigonish.
