AUS: Tigers, V-Reds clinch first round tournament byes

Dalhousie 88, Saint Mary’s 83… Tigers clinched a bye in the AUS tournament, taking leads as large as 19 points in the third quarter before holding off a late Huskies rally in a victory at DalPlex.  Dalhousie shot 12 for 21 from downtown including 4-6 by 5’11” Ritchie Kanza Mata (20 points, 5 assists) and 4-7 from 6’6″ Sven Stammberger (19 points, 7 boards).  6’2″ fifth-year senior forward Kashrell Lawrence led the way with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists.  Tigers host Acadia this evening at 8 PM AT/7 PM ET in the only AUS game on the docket.

UNB 99, Cape Breton 93… 6’0″ Javon Masters had 26 and 6’3″ Hess Mayele added 23 as the Varsity Reds won at home, clinching one of the two top spots in the AUS standings.  Capers remain winless but got a wonderful effort from downtown from 6’0″ Jack Macalay, who went 7 for 10 from beyond the arc, part of a 8-15 effort by the Capers who continue to look for their first win of the AUS regular season.

Acadia 88, St. FX 82… 6’3″ Ben Miller knocked down the winning three with about 20 seconds remaining, part of 19 point fourth-quarter effort in a back-and-forth with X’s star 6’7″ forward Kevin Bercy as the Axemen moved into a fifth-place tie with X-Men in AUS standings.  Miller finished with 31 points on 6-9 from downtown and scored Acadia’s final 9 points including a pair of clutch 3’s, the second of which gave Axemen the lead for good.  Bercy, a strong candidate for AUS MVP honors, had 12 of his 26 points in the final 10 minutes and added 14 rebounds.  Acadia visits Dalhousie tonight at DalPlex.
