Saint Mary’s 80, St. FX 79... 6’5″ center Brent Martindale came off the bench for 14 of his career-high 18 points in the second half including back-to-back buckets midway through the fourth to give Huskies the lead for good as the Huskies survived to move the semi-finals against UNB. Martindale was on the receiving end of several drive-and-dish creations by 6’4″ Brian Rouse and 6’2″ Kemar Alleyne as X at times struggled to guard the ball down the stretch, creating defensive rotations allowing Martindale to get free inside. X had two chances to tie it in the final minute however 6’7″ Kevin Bercy went just 1 for 2 on two separate occasions from the line. Prior to that, Bercy, the AUS MVP, took just one single free throw in the first 39 minutes of play despite getting a plethora of touches inside as X’s main offensive focus. Bercy finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds while 6’5″ Theon Reefer led all scorers with 28 points – all in the first three quarters.
Acadia 73, Memorial 65… 6’9″ Erik Nissen had a 12-point, 11-rebound double double while fellow AUS All-Star Ben Miller added 12/6 and 4 as the Axemen pulled away in the third quarter for a quarter-final win over the Seahawks, who had just 6 points in the first 10 minutes after halftime. 6’5″ Kyle Arsenault, the high volume shooting wing, had 19 to lead Acadia, shooting 7 for 22 from the floor. 6’9″ Vasilije Curcic had 23 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists in the final U-Sport game of his fine career in the loss. Axemen look to continue their path to the Final 8 with a semi-final game this evening vs. #1 seeded Dalhousie Tigers.
