Brock 69, Ottawa 67… 6’4″ Brandon Robinson’s bid for the game-tying bucket at the buzzer came off as the Badgers held off a furious Gee-Gees late game run to win the Wilson Cup Bronze at the Raven’s Nest in Ottawa. After Brock’s 6’3″ fifth-year forward Ryan Bennett knocked down a wide open three from the left baseline to give Badgers a 10 point lead with just 5 minutes remaining, Gee-Gees went on a 9-0 run started by a tough Robinson three with a hand in his face from the left baseline and capped by a three from 6’3″ Caleb Agada to get it to one. But underrated 6’1″ guard Michael Asemoto got free for a lay-up and then later, with the shot clock at one, created a foul, making one of two to up Brock’s lead to 5 with just one minute remaining. Ottawa got the game to within two and then Robinson forced 5’10” Tyler Brown into dribbling the ball off his foot for a turnover. On the ensuing possession, Agada drove the lane, spun and knocked into Bennett, who was whistled for what was an extremely tough foul that put Agada at the line with a chance to tie and 20 seconds remaining. Unfortunately Agada went 1 for 2 and Ottawa then fouled 6’7″ Dani Elgadi, who missed the first and made the second, setting up the final possession. Ottawa ran an iso for Agada who was cut off and forced to find Robinson at the top of the key. The third-year guard attacking, spun in the lane and threw up a tear drop that came off as the Badgers celebrated. Brock will now await the decision by the “at-large” committee tomorrow night on their fate as to whether or not they will travel to Halifax for the Final 8 next weekend. 6’7″ Cassidy Ryan had a career night for the Badgers with 11 of his 19 points in the first quarter while Agada led all scorers with 22 points in what was likely the final U-Sport game of his splendid career. Robinson added 14 in a losing cause in what was a foul filled game (49 total fouls).
