RSEQ: Redmen capture 4th conference crown in 5 seasons with easy win over UQAM

McGill 82, UQAM 65… Redmen broke open a tight game early in the second quarter to lead by 10 at the half and then used a 26-3 run, holding Citadins to just a single three-pointer over a 9 1/2 minute stretch of the second half to win the RSEQ tournament championship game decisively, their 4th conference championship in the past 5 seasons under Head Coach David DeAveiro.  It was a two point game early in the second quarter when Redmen knocked three 3’s in succession, the final two back-to-back by reserve 6’1″ guard Isaiah Cummins to build the lead to 10.  Cummins got to the rim later and 6’1″ Jenning Leung followed with a three from the left wing to grow the lead to 16 before Citadins turned McGill over a couple of times to get to 10 by halftime.  6’2″ Dele Ogundokun, doubtful at the start of the match with a sprained ankle, had 9 of his 13 points during the big second half while 6’1″ RSEQ all-star Jenning Leung added 8 of his team-high 15 with 6 assists added in a strong performance.  McGill shot 51% from the floor for the game including a tidy 11 for 25 (44%) from downtown including a 2-4 effort from 6’4″ Avery Cadogen, who also helped spark the first-half run.  6’2″ lefty Greishe Clerjuste kept UQAM in the game with 13 of his game-high 24 in the first half but Citadins simply could not contain McGill’s read-and-react offense and hot three-point shooting.  Redmen now await the official Final 8 seedings to be announced tomorrow evening.  Expect McGill to be a 4 or 5 seed and potentially take on either the Canada West or AUS champions in the first round.
