Saturday recap: Rams earn #1 seed (to be confirmed Sunday night)

We hope to have more details on Ryerson’s important win at Carleton that gave Rams their second consecutive Wilson Cup championship and, as importantly, removed a sizable monkey off the back of Head Coach Roy Rana and the program – the win was the first for Ryerson at Carleton in the Rana era and comes on the heels of two home victories over the Ravens last season.  Clearly, Rana has evolved his program to an elite U-Sport level and tonight’s win is a testament to that progress… In the Canada West final, 6’7″ all-conference forward Brody Clarke went off for 29 points and 12 rebounds as the Golden Bears again were scorching from beyond the arc (10 for 21) in a 92-73 pasting of Manitoba Bisons.  Bisons had their impressive playoff-run winning streak snapped but still qualified for their first Final 8 since 1986 under Head Coach Kirby Schepp who deserves significant credit for righting the ship after an injury-plagued pre-season and some early season mis-steps… Given tonight’s results, which include Saint Mary’s handling UNB Varsity Reds – 6’0″ Javon Masters is still looking for his first victory at the AUS tournament – and Dal’s win over Acadia, all eight Final 8 participants have been decided.  With a single game remaining – Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s in an all-Halifax AUS tournament championship game tomorrow night – we can stick our neck out a bit and ponder the Final 8 seedings somewhat, as follows:  NOTE THAT MUCH OF THIS COULD CHANGE DEPENDING UPON WHETHER WILD CARD COMES OUT OF CANADA WEST OR OUA

IF DALHOUSIE WINS AUS CHAMPIONSHIP ON SUNDAY

#1 Ryerson (22-4)… OUA champions

#2 Carleton (27-1)… OUA Finalist

#3 Dalhousie (26-7)… AUS Champion

#4 Alberta (24-10)… Canada West champions

#5 McGill (21-5)… RSEQ champions

#6 Wild Card (either Calgary, Brock or UBC in my opinion)

#7 Saint Mary’s… AUS Finalist

#8 Manitoba (22-11)… Canada West runners-ups

which would set up the following first round match-ups:

Ryerson vs. Manitoba (Roy Rana vs. Kirby Schepp who have worked together for the past 3 summers)

Carleton vs. Saint Mary’s

Wild Card vs. Dalhousie

McGill vs. Alberta.

IF SAINT MARY’S WINS AUS CHAMPIONSHIP ON SUNDAY

#1 Ryerson

#2 Carleton

#3 Alberta

#4 McGill

#5 Saint Mary’s

#6 Wild Card

#7 Dalhousie

#8 Manitoba

setting up the following first round games:

Ryerson vs. Manitoba

Carleton vs. Dalhousie

Alberta vs. Wild Card

McGill vs. Saint Mary’s.

We hope to have more on the wild card situation tomorrow morning after we ponder a bit more.
