Shooting a sizzling 14 for 29 from three point range and breaking off on a 33-11 second quarter run, Canada moved to 3-0 at the Jones Cup in Taiwan with a 99-48 pasting of previously-undefeated Iraq earlier today in Taipei. 6’4″ Connor Wood and 6’3″ Diego Kapelan (Vancouver/McNeese State) combined to go 13 for 20 from downtown.
Wood led all scorers with 25 points – including 6-12 threes, adding 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals while Kapelan, the 30 year old two-man who has enjoyed a solid career in Europe after graduating from McNeese State in 2009-10, was a sizzling 7 for 8 from three as Canada moved to 3-0 on the tournament.
The tournament format is a straight nine-game round robin with the team finishing first in the standings declared the champions. 6’7″ Joel Friesen had 13 points while UBC’s All-Canadian 6’9″ Conor Morgan added 9 points and 5 rebounds for Canada, who next meets Republic of China-Blue tomorrow (7 AM ET), one of two local Taiwanese teams in the tournament, 1-1 and currently playing India. China-Blue was defeated 88-72 by the Philippines, which Canada knocked off 90-77 on the opening day of play.
