7 PM UBC-Okanagan at McMaster… Heat Coach Peter Guarasci has remade his roster after a 2-18 finish in Canada West last season, bringing in at least eight new recruits and transfers to build around 6’1″ guard Aldrich Berrios. As with most times when we seek the best and up-to-date Canada West information, we defer to Wayne Thomas at Canada West Hoops who has the details on UBC-O including a season preview. Tonight’s game marks the expected McMaster debuts of 6’3″ Miles Seward, 6’1″ Kareem Collins-Samuels and 6’6″ Sasha Simic, the touted transfers that new Head Coach Patrick Tatham has brought in as part of his own roster rebuild and is the first of three games this weekend for both teams.
8 PM Laval at Laurier… An interesting match-up between two very athletic teams as Justin Serresse begins his second season as Head Coach of the Golden Hawks. Both teams played NCAA Division 1 teams in August with Laurier defeating Binghamton while Laval, minus Head Coach Jacques Paiement Jr. and 6’5″ Alexandre Leclerc who were with Canada’s FISU Games entry in Taiwan, went winless in three games in August but have defeated a pair of Quebec-based prep/cegep teams earlier this month.
8 PM Winnipeg at Lakehead… The first of two this weekend in Thunder Bay between the former GPAC rivals as part of the T-Wolves Homecoming weekend. We expect to have a preview of both teams in the coming days.
8:30 PM Briercrest (CCAA) at Saskatchewan… Huskies are scheduled to return the majority of the core of their Canada West Final 4 team as they kick off their pre-season against Briercrest, a Saskatchewan community college based in Caronport (about 100 km. west of Regina). Briercrest has already posted a pair of victories against Canadian Mennonite University last weekend at home.
