Halifax, Ottawa (downtown), Halifax chosen for Final 8 sites ’19 thru ’21

In what was a well-overdue announcement, U-Sports this morning released the sites of the men’s basketball Final 8 for 2019 through 2021 and the results are likely to disappoint our friends in Western Canada as sites for the next three years are as follows:

2019:  Halifax (host Dalhousie)

2020:  Ottawa (downtown at TD Place; jointly hosted Carleton/uOttawa with both men’s and women’s events together)

2021:  Halifax (host St. FX).

Many believed that UVic’s bid was strong; certainly Victoria has a strong Canadian university basketball pedigree and a wonderful new facility.

The Ottawa bid was jointly submitted by the two local universities with Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, the management team responsible for TD Place in downtown Ottawa (Glebe).  This is the first time in recent memory that a bid was accepted that involved jointly hosting men’s and women’s tournaments at the same site at the same time.

Ryerson in 2019 and Queen’s in 2021 also won bids to host the women’s championships.

Halifax and Ottawa have proven over time to be solid hosts for this event.  This year’s tournament, hosted by Acadia, goes March 8-11th in Halifax.
